The hardest part of making a Best-of-the-Year list is establishing the parameter of the year, so I’m just going to make this simple and do two horror lists. The first is exclusively films that had either a theatrical, DVD or VOD release in the US of A. The second will simply be the unreleased films I saw in 2010, be they via film festival, import disc or screener, that did not receive Stateside distribution.

I feel like I use the “I normally don’t like…” phrase often enough that it has lost a bit of its heft. After a while one would think that enough qualifications of “normally don’t like” would mean that I do indeed like a specific type of film, but the reality is that I see so many dreadful movies of a certain kind that when I do finally feel motivated to write about one, it’s because it truly was an exception. With that in mind… I normally don’t like hardcore gore films, but I dug the hell out of the Thai stomach churner,
MEAT GRINDER.
Those who know my tastes know that I have a soft spot for Asian films, particularly of the Korean and Thai variety. But even though I’m predisposed to liking Thai horror films, I typically don’t like their gore-heavy entries. They have such a rich, superstitious culture worth delving into that it’s almost disappointing to watch them attempt to dabble in more Western flavors. MEAT GRINDER, however, is a captivating blend of Thai ideology, particularly of family relationships and the subservient role of women in the home, mixed with a sickening mastery of nasty make-up effects that look as though they’ve slipped out of the darker side of European horror. The title alone should give it away, but if you have a sensitive stomach, MEAT GRINDER will rip it out of your chest and make you eat it.

- MANDY LANE – Senator is finally going to release ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE (review) on July 17th? I wouldn’t count on it.
- SPLICE – Senator must be on a PR kick as they also slipped Bloody-Disgusting some photos from the upcoming Vincenzo Natali directed chimera-horror flick. Pics look great, though if one commenter is to believed, the script is awful.
- REPOSSESSION MAMBO – The Jude Law starring sci-fi tale of borrowed organs gets an R rating.
Remakes
- FRIDAY THE 13TH 2 – How does BD surmise the headline, “FRIDAY THE 13TH Sequel Officially Announced” and then link to a source article that clearly states, “Insiders caution that there is no green light”. We all know there is going to be a F132, but man, let’s wait until that “officially” means the same thing the dictionary says it does.
- THE BIRDS – According to Brenna Roth, who is in talks for a role in the Platinum Dunes recash, THE BIRDS will be shot in 3-D.
- TOTAL RECALL – Neal H. Moritz, yes the NHM curse of PROM NIGHT ’08, is allegedly bringing TOTAL RECALL back to the big screen his bank account.
- SORORITY ROW 2 – Summit has yet to release the remake of THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW and already the sequel is on a word processor somewhere.
Indie, Foreign and Random News
- 100 FEET – The Sci-Fi channel will be premiering Eric Red’s impressive haunter (review) on April 26th.
