• BAD MONKEYS – Matt Battaglia (who produced the cool, but languishing in release flick KILL THEORY) is producing BAD MONKEYS, a script about a girl who, when arrested for murder, claims to be part of a secret society dedicated to fighting evil.
• ENDANGERED SPECIES – Eli Roth’s next project as a director is still undergoing some script tweaking, after Roth showed a draft to Quentin Tarantino, of course, as well as some f/x tests to determine how it will be shot.

• Sundance 2010 – A look at the intriguing lineup for next year’s midnight movie slate at Sundance.
• FROST ROAD – Keith Arem is making the jump from the video game world (he directed the cutscenes in MODERN WARFARE 2) to the big screen with FROST ROAD, a story about “the survivors and victims of an invisible contagion in a small coastal Eastern town.”
• NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ORIGINS – The cast for the animated prequel film to NOTLD voice cast includes Danielle Harris, Mos Def and Bill Moseley.

Who: Series created by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA resurrector (and one time THE THING remake writer) Ron D. Moore.  Pilot directed by FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS producer-cum-blockbuster helmer Peter Berg.  Starring Sienna Guillory, Clea DuVall, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Jimmi “Liam McPoyle” Simpson.

What: Two hour pilot for a proposed science fiction series about the pangalactic travels of a spaceship in search of a substitute for a near inhospitable Earth.  Instead of STAR TREK’in encounters with new races, the crew spends most of their ten year journey in malfunctioning virtual reality.

Where: The sci-fi death slot on Fox and Fox affiliates in the US of A.

When: Friday, June 26th, 8pm.

Specifically, in his admittedly favorable preview of the S2 premiere, Herc expressed, “Bon Temps keeps reminding me of Sunnydale, and how much more fun Sunnydale was; “Buffy’s” plotting and dialogue were sharper and more graceful.”

Firstly, each a proxy for their respective show, Bon Temps is not Sunnydale and any contrast of the two is little more than rigor mortise clutching for a TV show that will never return.  Aside from a female protagonist and vampire pro/antagonists, the two shows have nothing in common.  The comparison cannot extend beyond foundation.  It’s like saying New York City is much more fun than London, yet the only real tendon connecting the two are asphalt and sky scrappers.  Each have distinct, mutually exclusive idiosyncrasies, to pretend they’re of the same ancestry and agenda is fruitless.

Pollination aside, I still don’t get how Herc can say Sunnydale is “much more fun” or that Buffy’s cobblestones are “sharper and more graceful”.  Combined those comments imply that Alan Ball’s agenda is to be both boring and dull.  Where Whedon’s was a world of teen aged apocryphal (mis)adventures and dealing with hormones, Ball’s is a world of dark acclimation to a new norm, levity being a natural byproduct of dealing with the unknown.  BUFFY sought fun, TRUE BLOOD safety nets into fun for balance.

(Spoilers for both shows abound)

Sure the death of Jenny Calendar was Buffy’s darkest episode to date when it aired, but it wasn’t until late in the second season that Whedon built a character so sympathetic that their removal would set the tone for the remainder of the season and beyond.

It only took Ball four episodes to build and shatter an antique and latent empathy for the life and death of Sookie’s Grandmother, a death that would also set the tone for the remainder of the season and, as the S2 premiere revisited, beyond.

I’m not out to point-counterpoint the two fictional worlds and the men who weave them, I’m simply trying to show the speed with which each show reached a particular landmark, which further shows there’s a reason TRUE BLOOD isn’t as much fun as BUFFY.  Plainly put, the issues TB deals with at times (pedophilia, incest, alcoholism, racism) just aren’t as naturally conducive to the same kind of fun that BUFFY dealt with (dating, puberty, high school).

I’ve never gotten why BUFFY took on this role as template for all past, present, and future shows.  Personally, BUFFY is my favorite show of all time.  I even think that Joss Whedon is the greatest story teller of our generation; yes, even surpassing personal hero Stephen King.  That doesn’t give him papal bull over what defines any and all shows that feature vampires.

Bon Temps is not as much fun as Sunnydale because, well, Bon Temps isn’t as much fun as Sunnydale.  Cute, conservative 16 year olds don’t sit around quoting movies waiting for vamps to comically spring from the grave.  Instead hot 20 somethings are strangled naked for committing the sin of having sex with vampires.  The two don’t exactly operate on the same moral scale.

And to lambaste TRUE BLOOD’s plotting and dialogue?  I can’t even remember a time when BUFFY so strongly established a character so quickly as TB’s Lafayette.  His dialogue is as sharp as it gets and the fate of his character was more tenuous than anyone in Buffy’s ever was after so little screen time.  There’s such an economy to the utilization of all the characters in TRUE BLOOD that a statement implying its contrasting bluntness to BUFFY is, frankly, silly.

I don’t think that TRUE BLOOD is a better show than BUFFY – I’ve yet to put on random episodes of TRUE BLOOD to cheer myself up, after all – but to pretend that the latter is the only game in town (particularly years after its broadcast store front was shuttered) reeks of nothing more than pledged fanboyism.  TV is not a one-or-the-other enterprise.  Bon Temps is not Sunnydale.

There are only two standard definition titles of the week that I recognize.  MUM & DAD is a British import that got some modest appreciation on the fest circuit.  The other is a flick called THE 8TH PLAGUE, which has found its way in this DVD guide well over a year ago.   I’ve seen neither.  The best bet may be THE 8TH PLAGUE, seeing as it now has a special edition.

Rounding out the straight to DVD titles of the week are ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, SCARCE, HOUSE OF THE DEMON, UNCONCIOUS.

The real winners of the week are the hi-def titles.  I’m not the biggest fan, but DOG SOLDIERS on Blu is definitely going to warrant a watch, if not a purchase at a cheaper price point.  I can’t say the same for TWILIGHT, though.  Vampires that sparkle like diamonds are only going to look sillier in 1080p, but the teen vamp phenom certainly has its fans.  Why else would Amazon think they could get away with charging $80 for a collectors edition?

This leaves Season 2 of  “DEXTER” as the winner for the week.  Season 2 has been available on DVD for a while and if you already own that set, other than the bump in looks there isn’t much incentive to pick it up in Blu.  If, however, you are looking to save the economy by needlessly spending money, at $39 the price is right for a great show in the best available format.

May 12^th

Do you own THE MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN?  Do you own ALIEN APOCALYPSE?  No?  Is it because they’re awful movies?  Well, now you can get twice the awful for half the price!  The Chin doubles up with the disc 2 TIMES THE BRUCE, though neither is worth $14.  Sorry, Bruce.

Guh, is this a crappy start to the month or what?  Next up is BTK, THE GRUDGE 3, and PLAGUE TOWN.  I can’t speak to the quality of any of these three, though I think you can trust your instincts.  BTK could be a Lifetime channel movie if Kane Hodder didn’t play the real life killer, THE GRUDGE 3 is near franchise abandonment and I saw someone on Twitter a week or two ago say PLAGUE TOWN was awful.  Great month!  Ugh.

The biggest genre title of the week is UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS.  I never much liked the UNDERWORLD franchise.  Oddly (though not without easy explanation) I do like Kate Beckinsale, but the franchise does nothing for me.  I was out of country when this hit theaters, but I’m interested to see if Rhona Mitra can bring some fresh blood to the series I always felt suffered a lack of blood.

Worth stepping outside of the genre we have TAKEN, which gets a mention because it is a phenomenal return to form for the one-man action genre.  I stopped counting, but if I had to guess I’d have to peg my TAKEN viewing count at no less than 7 times.  If you saw Liam Neeson throat chopping all of Paris in a theater in the States, you actually got a watered down experience.  This DVD and Blu-ray remedies that with the uncut, trigger happy version.  This is a must see for any fan of ’90s action.

Blu-ray titles for the week include the mentioned RISE OF THE LYCANS (as well as a trilogy set of all three latex loving entries to the UNDERWORLD verse) and an HD release of the ‘original’ THE GRUDGE.

May 19^th

It has just occurred to me that MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (review) is the best horror I’ve seen in theaters so far in 2009.  That is a statement I was not expecting to make, but is a testament to how much fun Patrick Lussier’s dimension thrusting update/ how piss poor the rest of the offerings have been so far this year.  Both the DVD and BRD for this release include the 3D presentation as well as the 2D, though I’m ignorant as to what method is used.  Everyone always talks about the ‘good’ 3D and the ‘bad’ 3D.  If someone knows the difference, do drop some knowledge.

I love Magnet Releasing for giving festival titles broadened exposure, which they’ve done once again with EDEN LOG, which is a bizarre French hybrid of science fiction and horror.  Taken as a whole, EDEN LOG is nothing to write home about, but it does have highlights and a technical mastery on the part of director Franck Vestiel, who for a feature first timer does an excellent job of invoking BRAZIL era Terry Gilliam.  Also available on Blu.

I’ve heard mumblings of good things about British offering BANE, which I’m told has a low budget look not unlike the majority of titles each month, but that its strong script takes familiar material better places.  Perhaps the same can be said of BACKWOODS (Haylie Duff, weird) and THE DEVIL’S GROUND (Daryl Hannah, weird) don’t know, but I’ll definitely be checking out BANE.

Reaching back into the catalog is 1982′s THE LAST HORROR FILM, which is not to be confused with THE LAST HORROR MOVIE, an intelligent Brit Indie from a few years back that I never pass up an opportunity to recommend.

I wish I could recommend Vikings and Astronaut vs Alien Beowulf flick OUTLANDER, but I’d only go so far as to shove it somewhere in your Netflix queue.  The premise was either going to lend itself to inspiration or mastication, unfortunately we get the later.  The best thing that can be said of OUTLANDER is that it chews and chews and chews on its roots, but never makes a meal of any of potentially tremendous elements.  Ron Perlman probably filmed this on the same day he did MUTANT CHRONICLES.

On DVD and Blu-ray we have Season 1 of HBO’s “TRUE BLOOD”, which last year replaced both “LOST” and “BATTLESTAR GALACTICA” as my favorite show on television.  I will be giving this a buy in Blu and couldn’t be more excited about watching each episode again before the season 2 premiere in June.  Sexy is probably the number one adjective bandied about describing the show, sexy is a killer buzz word for a blurb, but the show goes above and beyond its nudity.

The first three episodes are burdened by the heavy weight of having to acclimate the viewer to a supernatural world more adult than any genre fare in years, but the show really finds its groove around the time Bill recounts for a church group how he was turned during the civil war.  From episode four on it is an invigorating, rapturous series.  Assuming whoever you watch this with is okay with sporadically gratuitous sex, I’d say this is a must buy.  If anything, Netflix it.

In addition to the mentioned titles on Blu, we’ve got Brad Anderson’s THE MACHINIST and a special edition of T2.

May 26^th

Three STD flicks end out the lackluster month: CARNIVOROUS, AMBITION and THE DEVIL’S TOMB.  I’m actually looking forward to THE DEVIL’S TOMB.  Not because I think it’ll be any good, but because a producer somewhere (likely in Europe) was able to wrangle a cast composed of Cuba Gooding Jr., Ray Winstone, Taryn Manning, Ron Perlman, Zack Ward, Bill Moesely AND Henry Rollins.  Somewhere in all that mediocrity must be at least one reason to justify 90 minutes of, er, tomb deviling.

And if you weren’t a sucker like me who bought it on HD DVD, you may want to go grab CHILDREN OF MEN, which hits the Blu shelves today.

• THE DARK TOWER – J.J. Abrams tells MTV that as soon as “LOST” finishes they’ll muscle up for the film series.  Considering STAR TREK is posed to be a huge success, I have a feeling Abrams will muster quite the budget once it hits the ground.
• DEATH NOTE – Warner Brothers picks up the rights to the popular Japanese manga/anime/live action series about a book that grants its owner the ability to kill anyone whose name is written inside.
• COLD SKIN – David Slade is attached to direct for Madrid films an adaptation of COLD SKIN, a novel about humanoid amphibians in the Antartic.
• I SELL THE DEAD – IFC has picked up the Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm staring indie for distribution (presumably as part of their aforementioned Midnight Movies slate).  In theaters and On Demand August 14th.

• LIVID – The French duo behind INSIDE have revealed their next project to be the tale of some punks who attempt to rob the “increasingly peculiar” house of a coma patient.
• SPAWN – Todd McFarlane claims to have seven offers in the table to do a new SPAWN movie.
• THE CHRIST MUST DIE – According to Stephen Fry, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh want to make use of a vacant but enormous Jerusalem set constructed in New Zealand by producing a movie in which Nazi zombies travel back in time to kill Jesus.  Kudos to whoever dreamed up that bullshit.
• MISTER WEED-EATER – Joe R. Lansdale’s short story about a blind and creepy groundskeeper will be adapted and directed by Brian James Fitzpatrick.
• BOOK OF BLOOD – The Sci-Fi channel will be premiering the adaptation of Clive Barker’s BOOK OF BLOOD.

Just a heads up that Sci-Fi is airing Eric Red’s return to the field, the Famke Janssen starring ghosty 100 FEET (review) tonight (4/26/09) at 9 Eastern.  I’ve no idea what their for TV edits consist of, but the movie boasts a few standout sequences that make it worth a watch.

Weather out on the east coast is beautiful, though, so you may just wanna DVR it for a rainy day.

Firstly, if you’re unfamiliar, the Independent Film Channel opened an On-Demand portal a few months ago, debuting films into theaters and homes at the same time.  In the beginning most of the titles were, for obvious reasons, Indie dramas.  This year, however, they’re branching head first into the orbit of our beloved genre with their Midnight titles, of which they have 30 lined up for 2009.  A few will be theatrical pushes, the majority will be available via On-Demand on most cable providers.  I’ll break out the heavy title boasting full slate from April through September after this jump, but in the mean time I want to talk about THE CHASER.  It is not a horror film, but I place a patent pending HND seal of approval upon it all the same.

Not only is THE CHASER  the debut of first time writer/director Hong-jin Na, but it is also my favorite Korean film since 2003′s MEMORIES OF MURDER.  Yes, better than THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD.  Better than THE HOST.  Better than even OLDBOY.  I picked up a copy of it when I was in Seoul and wish I’d grabbed six more to give away to friends.  I almost don’t want to say word one as to what it is about, but I suppose I’ll simplify how unconventional of a thriller it is by describing it as being about a pimp who gets caught up in the web of a serial killer who has been hiring out and killing off his girls.

It is a phenomenal film.  Please go check it out.  IFC has it for a few bucks, you won’t regret it.

This Spring/Summer, IFC Films will be releasing two highly anticipated horror films via its IFC in Theaters platform which brings acclaimed independent movies to on demand viewers in more than 50 million homes across the country the same week they premiere as an exclusive engagement in New York and/or Los Angeles. The films are:

• * PONTYPOOL (May 29th) — 2008 Toronto Film Festival favorite directed by Bruce McDonald and starring Stephen McHattie about a radio station that comes under the attack of zombies; the film also had its U.S. premiere last month at the SXSW Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art’s prestigious Canadian Front 2009

APRIL IFC FESTIVAL DIRECT ON-DEMAND TITLES — DIRECT FROM THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Each month IFC Films offers two to four new genre titles via its IFC Festival Direct on-demand service. These films are available nationwide for 90 days on most major cable systems representing more than 30 million households and can be found in a special “IFC In Theaters” “IFC Festival Direct” or “IFC Midnight” branded section within each cable company’s on- demand platform. The dynamic April lineup includes two critically acclaimed films direct from the 2008 Cannes Film Festival: THE CHASER and FRONTIER OF DAWN.

THE CHASER, directed by Na Hong-Jin, won seven 2008 Korean Film Awards including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Screenplay and was a massive box office hit in South Korea. It premiered at Cannes in the Official Selection and was quickly snapped up for an American remake by the producers of THE DEPARTED and Warner Brothers. Also in May is CADAVER, a portentous mix of claustrophobic menace and old-fashioned gore from South Korean filmmaker Derek Son. The film centers on a group of medical students who embark upon their first autopsy in an apparently cursed medical department. CADAVER premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2008.

The June IFC Festival Direct Midnight lineup features the acclaimed psychological thriller FEAR ME NOT from the award-winning Danish director Kristian Levring. In this intensely chilling film, a run-down middle-aged workaholic (Ulrich Thomsen) enrolls in a clinical trial for a new antidepressant without telling his family. When the trial is abandoned because of dangerous side effects, he continues to take the medication, triggering a hellish descent into madness. FEAR ME NOT premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival and will also be shown at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. Also in June is the Spanish arthouse film DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIAC. The film tells the erotically charged story of a middle-class French girl’s unbridled trysts in hotels, parks, cemeteries, her fall into prostitution, the ins-and-outs of a brothel and her final redemption.

Want to turn the collective literary works of H.P. Lovecraft into a monster of the week network television show with a leaked cast pic so pansy it makes the Jonas Brothers look like bear fucking lumberjacks? The ammo is on me.
