You have haunted houses. You have ghost towns. But how about an entire city crawling with the shadows of the dead and the damned? Enter Pripyat, Ukraine.
A new still has been released from the upcoming film Chernobyl Diaries, from Alcon and FilmNation. Keeping us in the dark, literally and figuratively, the picture offers us very little, except the lingering knowledge that when the sun goes down, the residents who never left Pripyat come out. It seems radiation sickness is the least of your worries when visiting the wastelands of Chernobyl.
Jump Past The Bump For The Image!
The story of Chernobyl Diaries comes to us from the mind of Oren Peli, the creator of the scary successful Paranormal Activity. What does this tell us? Well, hopefully we can expect a slow-building, tension-inducing, haunted house thrill ride on a massive urban scale, while still giving us the feeling of being utterly and completely alone. After all, you’re in a military-protected fallout zone in a former Soviet bloc country. If you survive the night, who do you think is going to come to your rescue? All this, coupled with the real-life reports of ghostly apparitions and paranormal incidents within the city of Pripyat, should make your drive home at night through your empty streets all the more unsettling.
While I did not feel that Paranormal Activity shattered the horror landscape, I did find it to be a solid film, and I hope that Peli can deliver once again, despite his absence from the director’s chair. In the mean time, check out this awesome poster for the film. It’s almost like they were trying to throw in everything I find creepy and disturbing…
Mark your calendars for May 25th. I’ll see you on the other side.
