Caught a work-in-progress screening of Drag Me To Hell in Austin here last night. Then I watched the trailer.

The trailer's kinda awful, I think, and really fails to capture the tone of the film, which was totally, completely awesome. I know that a first-screening crowd with the director in attendance isn't the most unbiased context to see a film in, but it's a really, really fun horror film, with genuinely scary moments side-by-side (or sometimes surrounding) genuinely funny moments. There are also a number of jump scares that pay off in ratcheting up the tension.

There are some minor quibbles - a few things are a little too goofy, for example. And there's a tone within the dramatic narrative stuff (the promotion) that's a little unsubtle and over-the-top in a way that might turn some people off, but that I think really works for the film. Raimi clearly set out to live up to his film's title, in all its semi-silly, semi-terrifying raucous splendor.
