I totally disagree with the review! It's not the Michael Crichton comments I have a problem with (I do agree Fragment is not particularly "Crichtonesque"). It's the reviewer's conclusion that the last quarter of the novel is what makes the rest of it worthwhile. Honestly, the last quarter of the novel is what made me wish I had stopped reading 3/4 of the way through! Yes, the novel is more fantasy than science, but it's scary and interesting and it had me from the outset. But when Fahy decided to go all soft and squishy on us (I don't want to give anything important away, but the creatures discovered near the end of the novel are simply too cute to be believed), he completely lost me. This is a novel about nature gone crazy -- it didn't need the feel-good, ain't life sweet, hopeful ending. Overall, Fragment is a lot of fun. Just prepare yourself for a lot of "stickiness" in the end.

My interests are in scifi stuff which is reasonably believable and set round about our era-give or take a few decades.
I have read many novels of this genre over the last 6 decades-there are the good, the bad,and the in-between.This,in my humble opinion,is in the 1st catagory and insert a very in between the and good!
It is as good as Michael Crichton, and even better in some ways.
It is a novel of the type that is very difficult to put down once started!I hope there is a sequel and definitely a movie.
Peter Hall's critique is of reasonable value in some ways, but are a good reason to always see the material at 1st hand yourself before making a decision.

I found this to be a very interesting and enjoyable book. I'm a huge fan of Michael Crichton and I completely agree with the comparison's drawn. The creature's, while outlandish, are supposed to have seperated from the main biological species about 300 million years ago so I will give him some creative leave. Most of the creatures with the exception of the disk ants are fairly believable. They are pretty much huge mantis shrimp. It also has some moral dilemmas involving our treatment of nature. Teriffic novel, and I highly recommend it.

I read this book and enjoyed it, and also thought, darn, this would make an excellent SyFy Channel movie... young people doing stupid things and dying hideously and oh yes, there's sex. They really should option this book for a film! ;)

I loved this book. I'm a regular si-fi horror maniac and FRAGMENT shook me right out of my seat!
Like JURASSIC PARK, we have an inside look at what things MIGHT have evolved into given a slight change of circumstances. Although; some reviews might nit pick at the small things or even the 'grand picture' of what this novel was SUPOSSED to get across, personally I found it wildly amazing and look forward to a sequel.
