Rut-Roh: Need Advice Wasting Money.

Rut-Roh: Need Advice Wasting Money.

Posted by Peter Hall - November 17th 2008 @ 2:09 pm

Despite one incident with some soldiers wanting a bribe (hell of an end to a good night), things are going just fine in Abidjan.  However, my laptop died the other night.  Completely donezo.  I’ll be back in the states on Thursday, at which point I’ll make a final decision on a replacement.

I’m leaning heavily towards one of the new Mac Book Pros.  I told myself that once I finally needed a new laptop, I was going to switch to the Apple cult, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this soon.  I know Cupertino just refreshed their lineup, so I suppose now is as good a time as any.  If I do, I’ll be going with the 2.53ghz model (mainly for the bump in the gfx card) with a plan on using Leopard’s built in Boot Camp to load on XP as well (mainly for gaming.  Are Steam apps ported to Mac yet?)

Any nerds out there object to or encourage such a purchase?  Is there a sweet ass deal on the horizon I should know of?  A new, new refresh of the hardware?  Some unholy deal on Black Friday?  If so,  please let me know.  Until then, I hate to say the deadline of a post outage is extended another week or more.

Unless of course I completely jump the gun and order a laptop from Abidjan so it’ll be home when I return  This is very likely as I am trigger happy with a credit card.  Oh, should the need arise, best to email me at my gmail account [ petershall ] than @horrorsnotdead.com – Having trouble checking HND webmail from the customer’s site.

As you said, the hardware was just refreshed. Probably won’t be a newer new version until next spring. So if nothing else, the timing is good.

To the best of my knowledge, Apple’s Black Friday deals will probably be aimed at more at the lower entry machines, but could shave a couple hundred bucks off.

In any case, I’d suggest considering AppleCare if you go that route. The power supply in my iMac died once, and it cost over $300 to replace the stupid thing because I couldn’t just pick one up and replace it. Proprietary parts suck.

Well, I won’t flood the comment section, but I have the Best Buy and Circuit City circulars from black friday (thank you internets). I’ll just e-mail them to you.

You can get some sweet deals…Circuit City is going the way of Babbages (Minus a Game Stop to buy them up) and Best Buy is begging for sales. I was in the manassas stores last week and saw some good prices for lap tops.

Well, the Circuit City in Manassass is going out of business. 30% off everything they have in the store.

I’ll be in line at Best Buy on black Friday. I want a new TV.

Never done the Black Friday thing, and don’t care to.

Recommendations for wasting money? Well, I hear you can hire that guy who sings the “Real Men of Genuis” Bud Light commercials to belt out a customized version for you. Sounds like a good investment.

You know, I was never a fan of macs.

I know I’ll get bashed but it seems like you’re paying out the nose for the name, like with a macbook air.

Newegg.com is usually great for computers, I’d say look through there and see if you find something you like and if you have to have the mac look, use windows blinds and use the leopard OSX theme.

If you decide to not go with Mac and want something that’ll play a game or two, I’ve heard good things about xoticpc.com.
