This is what happens when someone who usually does feature films does short fiction, which should almost never exist in cinematic form to begin with. When this mistake is made, we see people who are used to having 90-120 minutes to work with, are forced to fit it into 40 minutes. Doesn't give them time to develop stories as they normally would. When you really think about it you find two reasons for the failure of projects like Fear Itself and the Landis film in question. One is the people don't realize generally speaking, we like long stories. The days of Rod Sterling and Alfred Hitchcock are unfortunately gone. The only way to make short fiction like this work is to serialize it. A good example is Blood Trails in Dust to Dust. Another workable concept is several related shorts set in the Saw universe. Similar to what was done with the animatrix and Gotham Knights. I know this is just one man's opinion but i believe it very strongly
