I’m thinking of making some changes…

Every couple months I get ancy when it comes to my website(s).  I constantly want to tweak them, to undo some unclear inferiority no one has even commented on.  And right about now I’m due for some ancy fiddling, only this time I’d like your thoughts.

First, the format.  As you’ve surely decyphered by now, despite being a blog, I abandoned the typical blog format during the last re-design in favor of a 1 x Blog Post, 2 X Review last-in, first-out format.  I like it, I think it looks good, but I think I’m going to go back to a standard, single column posting schema.  If I do, I’ll certainly do my best to implement some kind of categorical visual distinction between plain posts and reviews.  Not that the title won’t give it away, but I’m kind of bored with the whole single column diddy seen on every. single. website. on the internet.

Second, the DVD guides.  I believe I’ve asked this in the past, but does anyone even care about the DVD handling on this website?  Even if you don’t, I’ll keep doing it solely because it forces me to keep fresh on what is available.  However, I’m leaning towards abandoning the whole Calendar (sorry Chris) and reverting to the more contiguous, actual guide type I did in all of ’07.  Any thoughts on that?  Does anyone need the commentary or does purely listing the DVDs satisfy all hypothetical needs?

Third, commenting.  I’m toying with the idea of adding member registration to the site.  Haven’t fully explored it yet, but does the idea of having a more user controlled side to things appeal to anyone?  Even if I do open up registration, I won’t make it mandatory.  It’ll just let regulars have avatars etc…

    I like the idea of having the DVD commentaries myself. These days I’ve been basing a large part of my horror movie watching off of your recommendations, and that’s a big part of it.

    I like the idea of opening up registration as well.

    I like the current layout, but my problem right now is that if I miss a couple days then I usually can’t find who commented where, so a second column would be nice, even if its just dedicated to past updates or something. But if you want to go back to the old one, by all means don’t let me stop you.

    I hear you on the last bit, Sean. I prefer this format, but the drawback to it is that if there are more than 3 updates in a week, things get lost in the shuffle quick. If I can figure out a better way to communicate recent content, I’d like to keep it. If not, I suppose it is back to the ‘ole scroll the whole page…

    I love the idea of opening registration. Plus, I find the DVD commentary useful as well in helping with rental ideas. But it’s not going to kill me if it goes away. As long as you keep that creepy picture at the top of your site, you’ll be fine.

    P.S. Received LB2 soundtrack yesterday in the mail. Thanks Peter! I’m thinking it’s about time I sent you something. You said you haven’t seen The Exorcist 3 yet right?

    1) Your commentary on releases is a must.
    2) Thanks for the LB2 soundtrack. Removing the disc from the package was the first time I had held a physical CD in a few years.
    3) where has rj sayer been lately i hope nothing has happened to him omg
    4) I like the current setup but there needs to be a way to show more than two recent entries for each category on the first page.

    Thanks for the input, everyone. I’m glad to see that the DVD commentary is in demand, as I do enjoy doing it. Which reminds me, I know it’s two weeks late, but I will have September’s up in a few days.

    Brian, I dunno where RJ has been. I talked to him on AIM the day I arrived in Doha, but haven’t since.

    Sorry I never got around to throwing in my two cents, but I agree with Sean 100% on the difficulty of finding updates if I don’t get to the site every other day.

    I never looked at the calendar personally. I did like the DVD releases guide for ’07.

    I’m indifferent about registration. I mean, I would definitely do it, but I’m not excited (or depressed) about it either way.

    Peter, sounds like you might be interested in a content management system.

    You should look into Drupal. I’ve wanted to launch something on my site for a few months I just havn’t had the time. But basically it’s an extremely flexible/customizable way of displaying content and having a “community”.

    I know the Onion uses drupal and I guess you can see what people do with it here.

    Josh, I already use WordPress, which allows for all the features in talks. Drupal looks great, but I don’t want to migrate to a whole new system when I’ve just been too lazy to activate features already included.
