First Impression: SPLATTERHOUSE (Game)

I think it is great that the trailer is hosted on a server hooked in with a 14.4 modem.
okay. so as a long time Splatterhouse fan, i can say that this trailer is bullshit. EXCEPT for the voicemail message audio (which - as a long-time Splatterhouse fan - gave me fucking chills) and that AWESOME end to the live action sequence with the spiked club being dragged off the table.
there really should have been something involving the mask in there. i think i can pretty much assure you, Matt, that the HOSTEL vibe is merely what they’re using to sell this to an audience too young to be familiar with the first series of Splatterhouse games.
then again, maybe you already know that and were simply stating that such a cheap tactic is what’s throwing you off.
anyway, i’m super fucking psyched for this title. SPLATTERHOUSE FTW!!!11!!1
Haha, I was never into Splatterhouse (I never played it, but I have seen the videos on youtube), but I saw the trailer and thought “Meh…well, RJ will want to see this.”
Also, didn’t the regular guy dawn the mask to go on a killing spree and he was the exact same guy? Seems like the mask turned him into a hulking beast. Oh well, it is still about a year away. This contains so little information I can’t say a whole lot.
haha. well, i appreciate it.
nah, the mask made him a little bigger and stronger. and it wasn’t really to go on a killing spree, it was to save his girlfriend from the evil West Mansion. in later games, they even had a super hulking mode or something to that effect where Rick got EVEN bigger. and he did some type of weird wrestling moves and shit. it was kinda lame.
the original game is available for download on the Wii, if you have one of those lil’ kid toys of a console.
I play my Wii more than my Xbox 360 and PSP combined…but sad truth is, not as much as my DS
Really, Matt? I’ve only heard there are 2 or 3 games worth getting a wii for.
I can’t warrant throwing, what, 250 dollars? on a wii, which would basically be only so I could play the VC, which I can do on my computer.
Other than that, hey, that doesn’t look bad.
I think we can all agree that Matt is 11 years old.
HA!
No, I just care more about games being fun over how they look. That’s NOT to say that the 360 and PS3 don’t have any good games…I just think the Wii has a bigger selection of ‘fun’. To be fair, any first person shooter game that has been released recently I have for my PC. I paid quite a bit for my PC, and I’m now in the middle of Fallout 3 with every single setting turned to high. So, I don’t buy FPS games for consoles.
But, I bought my Xbox 360 for about 2 or 3 games (yet I have like 10) and I’ll probably be getting a PS3 before the year is over, again, for just a few games here and there. As for my Wii, I have about 20 games for it. Same with my DS. They don’t look as good, but they are just more fun to me. But that’s just me.
so you’re idea of “fun” is getting frustrated, waving your arms around, and wanting to break something?
It’s not frustrating, I’ve never had problems with the controls.
As for waiving my arms around and wanting to break something: yes
“waving your arms around, and wanting to break something”
That’s funny, that’s exactly how I pictured YOU having fun, R.J…
yeah, i guess i should’ve been more specific, i meant the BAD kind of waving-your-arms-around-wanting-to-break-something.
maybe it’s my age, but i really hate the Wii. except for Wii bowling. that’s awesome. but every other game i’ve tried playing on it has just pissed me off. the only thing i really love about it is the VC, and even that isn’t as awesome as it should be. needs more games and needs to be cheaper.
granted, i don’t own a Wii, so maybe i’m just not familiar enough with it.
also, i’m an old fogey about controls. standing up and moving? fuck that shit. i want to sit down and have the whole goddamn thing in my hands.
plus the controls on some of the VC games have a weird response delay (ie: Splatterhouse).
Well, I’ve heard that some of the controls are off for VC games. Can’t defend that.
I dunno, I just never had a huge problem with the Wii in terms of controls. I can sit still and play without flailing about like a crazy person.
One thing I’ll say about the Wii, in terms of 3rd party games…they suck. Nothing ‘new’ in terms of series (sans No More Heroes and Mad World). Just the same franchises, but they are just fun to me. Speaking of that, I should work on my next review…
I understand, R.J., even with having to tilt my ps3 controller to do things I get grumpy. “NO, it goes THERE. QUIT.”
16 comments and i still don’t know what the fuck is SPLATTERHOUSE is?
I’m gonna let R.J. field this question…
My brother had the original on the TurboGrafx-16. I recall the theme being more exciting than the gameplay was. Never knew it had any sequels.
This video illustrates what I remember playing:

Peter - here’s a simple answer: SPLATTERHOUSE IS AWESOME. that’s what it is.
it was basically the precursor to survival horror. the prototype, even. it was a side-scrolling game - initially released in arcades as a stand-up coin-op and later adapted for Turbo Grafx 16 (and even later brought to the Sega Genesis) - in which you played Rick, a dude who had to rescue his girlfriend from the evil West Mansion. Rick put on the Terror Mask, which made him bulky and strong and then he just went through the Mansion, picking up a varitey of brutal weapons and laying waste to all kinds of nasty monsters - including aborted babies.
it was sweet. difficult as fuck. but AWESOME.
Gotta say…I’m gonna get laughed at for this knowledge but, Haunted House for Atari 2600 was considered the first survival horror game, and was released in 1982.
(Not that Splatterhouse didn’t have a big effect on the horror industry)
DUDE. The spider in the instruction manual for HAUNTED HOUSE scared the HELL OUT OF ME when I was a kid. I think I even threw it out I was so scared of the damn thing.
ha. we also shouldn’t forget the HALLOWEEN game for Atari.
and i think the FRIDAY THE 13th game for NES was even before SPLATTERHOUSE.
Let’s not talk about Friday the 13th…brings back some bad memories…
Yeah. Sheer frustration always leaves quite the impression.
