I saw this opening weekend, and I have NO fucking clue why, but I waited until one week ago to get the 2-disc DVD of it (yeah, I'm the guy who buys the 'editions' of movies) and decided to show my friends how great it is. It is one of my favorite horror movies, and I totally agree with Sam Jackson's one useage of fuck...it sets the tone quite well.

I'm not sure if I like or hate the total lack of origin of the room...I feel like going to the 'Scream' discussion of how lack of motive can make a movie scarier, but I'm too tired.

Nice review. I feel exactly the same way. For the first time in a long time, a horror movie that is genuinely scary and not relying on an axe through the skull or a sledge hammer in the knee cap to get the audience's attention.

Oh, and The 7th Guest scared the crap out of me as a kid, and that was just from playing 15 minutes with my Uncle.

Good review. I wrote one just this morning and feel pretty positive towards the film, though it just didn't scare me enough to earn a very high rating.

I agree completely about the scene with Cusack and Jackson. That's the movie, right there. Character development, humor, and a nice ramp-up in tension. Great scene.

I, too, was a little disappointed in the ending. Beware, SPOILERS...

...when the clock reset and the room started encouraging Enslin to kill himself, I thought there was a good chance Enslin would essentially say "screw you," and simply choose to go on reliving the hour forever, refusing to let the room "win." While not brilliant, I think it would have been in-character, and it's the kind of ending that helps films like this one achieve cult status.

That, or perhaps something akin to the room throwing a fit when he refuses to do himself in, which sorta-kinda happened anyway. Either way, I was awfully interested in the fact that the room was clearly intelligent and basically had a personality of its own. I don't know how plausible it would have been to expound on that, but I would've been interested in seeing them try.
